What Is Exam Anxiety?

Exam anxiety isn’t just nerves—it can feel like:

  • Your mind going blank in the middle of an essay
  • Racing heart, shaky hands, or short breathing
  • Overthinking and panic the night before an exam
  • Dreading failure, even if you’ve revised

It’s your body’s stress response—and you can train it to work for you, not against you.

Step 1: Get Ahead of It Early

Don’t wait until the week before exams to think about stress. Build small habits now:

  • Stick to a clear revision timetable
  • Practise with real past papers to reduce fear of the unknown
  • Use active recall and spaced repetition to build confidence
  • Schedule proper rest breaks (your brain isn’t a machine)

Confidence = the best antidote to anxiety.

Step 2: Train Your Body to Stay Calm

Your brain and body are linked—so when your body relaxes, your mind does too.

Try these simple tools:

  • Box breathing: In for 4 → Hold 4 → Out for 4 → Hold 4
  • Progressive muscle relaxation: Tense and release one muscle group at a time
  • Grounding techniques: Name 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, etc.

Pro tip: Use these techniques during the exam if you feel panic rising.

Step 3: Visualise Success (Yes, Really)

Top athletes and public speakers use visualisation for a reason. It works.

Before the exam, picture yourself:

  • Opening the paper and smiling because it’s a question you revised
  • Planning clearly, writing confidently, finishing on time
  • Leaving the room knowing you did your best

Visualisation helps shift your brain from fear → focus.

Step 4: Manage Your Environment

You can’t control the paper—but you can control your prep zone.

  • Pack your bag the night before
  • Bring water, pens, and a spare calculator (if needed)
  • Get to the exam early so you’re not flustered
  • Avoid last-minute panickers—they’ll only stress you out

Step 5: Reframe Your Thoughts

Instead of: “I’m going to fail.”
Say: “I’m prepared. I just need to focus and apply what I know.”

Instead of: “What if I forget everything?”
Say: “Even if I go blank for a moment, I can recover. I’ve practised this.”

Reframing helps you take control of your thoughts instead of letting them spiral.

Bonus: Quick Tips to Stay Grounded During the Exam

  • Don’t rush the opening minute—breathe and read the question twice
  • Underline keywords in the question
  • Stick to your timings—don’t let one question eat up all your time
  • Write something—even a short paragraph with a quote is better than a blank page
  • Move on if stuck—come back later with a clearer head

You’re Capable—Don’t Let Anxiety Steal That

Exams are tough—but so are you. You’ve done the work. You’re building habits. You’ve got this.
