Gerald Character Summary

Gerald is a wealthy, upper-class man who is engaged to Sheila Birling. He initially seems charming and respectable, but his actions reveal a more morally questionable side.

✔️ Confident and polite – Appears well-mannered and agreeable
✔️ Deceptive – Hides his affair with Eva/Daisy
✔️ Privileged – Benefits from his status and class
✔️ Morally conflicted – Shows moments of guilt but ultimately avoids full accountability

Priestley uses Gerald to expose the hypocrisy of the upper class and critique how privilege enables people to avoid responsibility.

Character Development: A Temporary Conscience?

At first, Gerald seems like the perfect gentleman. But his affair with Daisy Renton/Eva Smith reveals:

  • lack of loyalty to Sheila
  • An ability to manipulate someone vulnerable
  • A belief that his actions were somehow justified because he "helped" her

While Gerald does show some genuine remorse, he ultimately aligns himself with the Birlings and:

  • Doubts the Inspector’s legitimacy
  • Sees Eva’s potential survival as a relief
  • Tries to restore his engagement to Sheila without addressing the core issues

His lack of permanent change reflects Priestley’s criticism of the upper class's reluctance to reform.

Why Is Gerald Important?

A bridge between generations – Young like Sheila and Eric, but shares the conservative values of Mr Birling.

Symbol of upper-class hypocrisy – Offers Eva kindness, but still exploits her.

Contrast to the Inspector – Gerald tries to explain away his actions, while the Inspector demands full moral responsibility.

Foreshadows emotional damage – His treatment of Eva mirrors the emotional and psychological cost of class and gender exploitation.

    • Conventional – Represents traditional patriarchal, class-based values
